British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
