EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
