The artist has donated the entirety of his £25,000 honor prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to save the UK's independent live music spots.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

He also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The money assisted venues that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties stemming from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received funding support in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," the star has said.

He is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

Back when the band received the prize in 1996 for their album their work, vocalist the singer announced that the act would give their cash to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her bounty among several organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," she explained to outlets.

Two years ago, they gave their prize money to the community center that nurtured their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients they gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist the singer. "The cash was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success touched another person's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the second in the city were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
