Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
