Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important political figure stated the incident left him speechless and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
