Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
